Animal Collective Seek Truth in 'Monkey Riches'

Animal Collective seek truth in their new video for "Monkey Riches," but like everything associated with the innovative psychedelic rockers, the search isn't so straightforward. In the clip, an old, bedridden sage shows off his powers with magical ropes to a young couple, and though he wields impressive magic himself, he's aided by a mysterious well.

The old man might be wise, but he's also darkly humorous and menaces the couple with a swarm of ropes and knots. Desperate to escape his magic, the lovers retreat to the well to find the source of sage's power. But they discover his supernatural skills are utterly overwhelming.

"The whole video is about consequences," director Jack Kubizne told Vice and Intel's Creators Project, who produced the clip. "[The old man] possesses some kind of knowledge or teaching he would readily hand down if only we could see it right in front of us. Whether we are able to receive that knowledge is something I think a lot of people struggle with nowadays."

"Monkey Riches" is on Animal Collective's latest album, Centipede Hz. The band has rescheduled some previously canceled tour dates supporting the LP; a full list of fresh shows and ticket information is available here.
