Cheryl Fernandez-Versini’s ‘I Don’t Care’ Makes The Songwriter’s ‘Skin Crawl’

Cast your minds back to November 2014 (it’s tough, we know) and you might just remember Cheryl Fernandez-Versini releasing the ruddy amazing ‘I Don’t Care’ into our lives and ears.

You do? Jolly good. Well, while we used it as our fight song for longer than we like to admit - sorry, neighbours - the song’s writer Bonnie McKee is not so keen.

In fact, she’s admitted she’s pretty heartbroken about how her track ended up, although she did praise the way the song sounded.

Eek.

Speaking about the single to Idolator, Bonnie revealed: “I wrote a song called I Don’t Care, that’s not what I called it actually. Cheryl [Fernandez-Versini] cut it and it went to number one in the UK last year.

“That was my 10th number one, so I’m grateful for it but I didn’t want to give it up. It was a song I had written for myself. They tweaked a couple lyrics and changed the title.

"The original title was Waking Up Diagonal. It’s the first line of the song. I just thought it was more interesting than I Don’t Care, which is such a boring title to me.

“When I hear that song it breaks my heart a little bit because it’s my story.”

Bonnie, who has written huge songs for the likes of Katy Perry (Teenage Dream and Roar, for example) and Taio Cruz (Dynamite), went on to explain exactly how Chezza’s version makes her feel.

She continued: “I mean the Cheryl Cole song was great, they did a good job with it, but it just wasn’t the way I would do it.

“It really makes my skin crawl. I’m just like, ‘This isn’t how it’s supposed to be’.”

Despite Bonnie’s disappointment, the song went on to become Chezza’s fifth number one.
