Fetty Wap Tops U.S. Album Chart With Self-Titled Debut

Rapper Fetty Wap, the brains behind the inescapable “Trap Queen,” hit No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with his self-titled debut record in the week ending Oct. 1, according to data from Nielsen Music.

“Fetty Wap” moved 129,000 units in its first week on the market, riding the radio success of the rapper’s singles “My Way” and “Trap Queen.” The album debuted to fan delight just days before the rising hip-hop star was injured in a motorcycle accident, but he has since recovered.

Wap relegated last week’s chart-topper, Drake and Future’s “What a Time to Be Alive,” to second place. The hip-hop collab moved 107,000 units, down 72% after a big premiere.

Six more albums debuted in the time frame in addition to Fetty’s. Don Henley’s “Cass County” bowed in third place; the Eagles singer moved 89,000 units with his country set. “Cass County” marks his first record in 15 years, as well as his highest-charting solo effort to date.

Country giant George Strait nabbed the No. 4 spot with his latest record. “Cold Beer Conversation” moved 86,000 units in its first week, making it Strait’s 20th album to reach the top 10 and thereby bolstering his record for most top-10 albums by a country artist.

R&B crooner the Weeknd slid to fifth place in “Beauty Behind the Madness'” fifth week on the chart. Driven by the continued popularity of singles “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face,” the collection moved 81,000 units, down 10% from the previous week.

In sixth place is another country debut, this time from Thomas Rhett. Rhett’s “Tangled Up” moved 76,000 units. Rhett’s 2013 album, “It Goes Like This,” also debuted at No. 6.

The unsinkable “1989” by Taylor Swift finished at No. 7, moving 41,000 units in its 49th week on the chart. Her music video for “Wildest Dreams,” the fifth single from the blockbuster album, just surpassed 100 million views on Vevo.

Scottish alt-rock outfit Chvrches opened at No. 8 with “Every Open Eye.” This marks the band’s first top-10 appearance; Chvrches peaked at No. 12 with first album “Bones” in 2013. Their current single “Leave a Trace” is in heavy rotation on alternative rock radio stations.

Electronic duo Disclosure dropped much-anticipated “Caracal” to the tune of 35,000 units, landing them in ninth place. Featuring cuts with vocal assists from Sam Smith (“Omen”) and Lorde (“Magnets,”), Disclosure’s second album is reaching a far wider audience than their 2014 debut, “Settle,” which peaked at No. 36.

Jack White-led rockers the Dead Weather bowed in tenth place with “Dodge and Burn,” which moved 33,000 units in its debut. The gritty rock band also reached the top 10 with its two previous albums, “Sea of Cowards” and “Horehound.”
