Here's Your First Glimpse of Clint Eastwood's 'Jersey Boys'

You could be forgiven for thinking that Clint Eastwood isn’t the best choice to direct a musical about rock ’n roll icons Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, but if the first trailer is any indication, the film adaptation of Jersey Boys looks to be, at the very least, a decent movie musical.

Jersey Boys chronicles the rise (and slight fall, but mostly rise) of The Four Seasons back in the early days of rock, when singing “Walk like a man/Talk like a man” in high falsetto was not considered ironic. Like most musicals constructed around an artist’s discography, this one will get a lot of mileage out of its soundtrack alone—“Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Who Loves You,” etc.

It’s got a decent cast, too. John Lloyd Young, who played Valli in the Broadway production, reprises his role, and Vincent Piazza—who played Lucky Luciano on the similarly Jersey-set Boardwalk Empire—features as well. Plus, it’s got Christopher Walken as mob boss Gyp DeCarlo.

And for those who think that Clint Eastwood lacks the chops to direct a musical, remember that he has composed the scores for six of his films, and the song he wrote and performed for Gran Torino was nominated for a Golden Globe. Dirty Harry knows music.
