Jackson, a first-time nominee, is one of the best-selling artists in history with over 160 million records sold. The 49-year-old pop icon still holds the title for the most consecutive Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 by a female artist with 18.

After a seven-year hiatus, Jackson is back to the music. Just last month, the legendary singer released Unbreakable, her first full-length album since the death of her brother, Michael, in 2009. The tribute album to her late brother marks her first venture with her Rhythm Nation label. As ET previously reported, Jackson is arguably the first female recording artist of African-American descent to form her own record label. In addition to the album, Jackson is currently on her Unbreakable World Tour, which kicked off in August.

It's the fourth nomination for rap group N.W.A., whose story of how they revolutionized music and influenced hip-hop forever was shared on screen in the biographical movie, Straight Outta Compton this year. As depicted in the film, group members Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella are known as the most controversial and complicated voices of their generation, with well over 100 million records collectively sold over the last 29 years.

Another notable nominee is industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, formed in 1988 by Trent Reznor, who took the sounds and sights of transgressive art and turned it mainstream. It's their second nomination.

To be eligible for the 2016 nominations, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album no later than 1990. The other nominees are The Cars, Chaka Khan, Chicago, Cheap Trick, Chic, Deep Purple, The J.B.'s, Los Lobos, Steve Miller, The Smiths, The Spinners and Yes.

Ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 800 artists, historians and members of the music industry. Fans can also participate in the induction selection process, by casting their votes on rockhall.com. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a "fans' ballot" that will be tallied with the other ballots to choose the 2016 inductees. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2016 inductees will be announced in December, followed by an induction ceremony in New York City in April.
