Last week, Justin Bieber failed to garner a Grammy nomination for music from his top-selling third album, "Believe." His fans and manager vented online. But he's now being recognized for another achievement — a humanitarian effort.

In 2012, the 18-year-old pop star received more retweets than any other celebrity on Twitter, according to a report prepared by the social networking site.

In September, Bieber's tweet "RIP Avalanna. i love you" was retweeted 223,771 times. Bieber expressed condolences to late 6-year-old fan Avalanna Routh, who died of cancer.

Bieber's followers knew Routh's story. The adorable child who adopted the nickname "Mrs. Bieber" spent last Valentine's Day with the teen idol. They ate cupcakes, played board games and she even styled his hair.

In June, Routh joined Bieber on stage at the Apollo in New York and for an appearance on the "Today" show.

Routh got Bieber's attention after launching a Facebook campaign that received 12,000 likes.

Bieber's number of retweets was surpassed by President Barack Obama's "Four more years" election-night victory update that was shared 817,153 times, according to the report.

On the music front, Bieber's closest competition came from members of the popular boy band One Direction. Harry Styles, who is currently dating Taylor Swift, received 125,379 retweets in September during the Video Music Awards. "We owe you everything," he tweeted to fans. "Thank you so much for this. Three VMAs!! Yeah .xx" Group member Niall Horan was retweeted 103,772 times in July when he acknowledged the band's anniversary. "Guys its been 2 years today since we were formed, its been incredible so far, its all down to you guys! Love you all soo much! Thank you," he wrote.
