Trey Anastasio Musical Closes on Broadway

A new Broadway musical featuring music by Trey Anastasio will close after just three weeks. Hands on a Hardbody opened March 21st, but weak ticket sales have doomed the production to an early close, The New York Times reports. When the show wraps up on April 13th, it will have played just 28 previews and 28 regular performances.

Hands on a Hardbody follows a group of Texans who have fallen on hard times as they compete in an endurance contest to win a new truck. The production featured music by the Phish leader and Amanda Green and made its world premiere last spring at La Jolla Playhouse in California.

A positive initial response convinced producers to bring the show to Broadway, but it received mixed reviews when it opened. Despite the contributions of Anastasio, Green and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Doug Wright, Hands on a Hardbody has generated lackluster ticket sales – the musical only pulled in $240,040 for eight performances last week, about 22 percent of the maximum possible amount.
