New Year's Eve Programs Yield Big Gains on Social 50 Chart

Billboard

New Year's Eve television broadcast appearances and performances cause several of the artists on the Social 50 to jump up the tally.

Up first is Pitbull, who moves 23-16 after performing “Timber” in Miami on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve with Ryan Seacrest,” which kicked off at 8 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2013.

The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.

Pitbull ascends with a 21% bump in mentions and a 90% increase in retweets from his account on Twitter throughout the week. The exposure was further reflected on Facebook, where 283,000 new fans added contributes to the 346,000 he added across the other online platforms on which he is active, a 31% jump over the previous week.

Next up is Ariana Grande, who performed two songs, “Right There” and “The Way,” from Los Angeles as a part of the same “Dick Clark” show. Grande moves 4-3 with a 13% rise in conversation across Facebook and Twitter, which lead to a 38% rise in her overall social audience.

Jennifer Lopez also made a gain, making a 22-position leap to move 42-20 after posting a photo on Dec. 30 that hinted at her upcoming studio album. The photo performed particularly well across online outlets, garnering 145,000 likes on Instagram (at press time), which helped translate to a 32% rise in Lopez's overall Social 50 score for the week.

Miley Cyrus' 'Adore You' Video Sends Her to No. 1 on Social 50 Chart

Demi Lovato jumps back into the top 10 after a week hiatus, moving 14-4 as she celebrated the new year by performing for Entertainment Tonight Canada on New Year's Eve. The singer performed “Heart Attack,” “Skyscraper” and “Nightingale” during the broadcast, which took place at Niagara Falls. Her chart rise is fueled by a 144% increase in the number of overall fans acquired during the week, the majority of which (898,000) were added on the Facebook platform.

To recap the rest of the top 10, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber remain steady in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Katy Perry (No. 5) and One Direction (No. 6) also remain in their same slots as last week, while Beyonce creeps up a position, moving 8-7. Taylor Swift ascends 10-8 while Eminem continues his descent, moving 7-9. Rihanna descends 3-10, a trend we can expect to reverse soon, as Shakira’s newest single “Can’t Remember to Forget You," which features Rihanna, is due out next week.
