In 1830s Northumberland, after cholera claims both of her parents, 16-year-old Cissie Brodie stubbornly vows to raise her five young brothers and sisters herself. Only a bare cave- and the kindness of villagers- keep the children out of the workhouse. But one man's lust and cruelty change Cissie's life forever, setting in motion a series of events that test her courage and character.
