In the 1950s boogie woogie piano was the foundation of rock. You couldn't find any self-respecting rock band that didn't have a piano player. In the '60s, the piano was pushed out by Marshall stacks and punishing decibels of volume. In the '70s, the piano was now the exclusive province of singer-songwriters. Then they disappeared again (if you don't count the endless parade of bad '80s synthesizers) until the late '90s,  when a bunch of super-sensitive dudes started churning out tunes with super-sensitive arpeggios.
