Venezuela undone: A country in economic crisis

Once among the richest and safest countries in Latin America, Venezuela is now falling apart. With a plunge in the price of oil and years of mismanagement, the economy is unraveling. Food is scarce. Crime is rampant. Hospitals barely work. And people are fighting desperately just to survive from day to day.

Tens of thousands are going hungry or even starving and the average shopper spends 35 hours a month waiting in line, while the murder rate is among the highest in the world – yet Venezuela’s socialist government is more entrenched than ever as a sense of hopelessness has settled over what was once among the richest nations in South America.
